Using Microsoft 365 are you confident all of your data is being backed up?

Updated: Oct 12, 2020

I recently held a webinar with a group of Accounting Firms discussing Microsoft 365 and how great it is for firms to use. If you look at what you get for your money, Office, Intune, Azure Information Protection, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive and more its fantastic value.

What came as an absolute surprise to all of the firms was that Microsoft doesn’t back your data up in the way that they thought it did. Just looking at Email most firms thought Microsoft backed it up in the same way as they might have done when they had on premise exchange. Then they could restore emails deleted or lost from months or in some cases years before.

They were shocked to find out that when you delete an email from your inbox it stays in your recycle bin for a month then is permanently deleted. So, any request from HMRC where the data was in an email could be lost causing reputational damage as well as financial risk to the practice.

If you would like to find out how to check if your email is being backed up properly please let us know and we will be happy to check for you. If it isn’t you will be relieved to know that there are products out there that can sort this issue for you quickly and easily.
